Research

This research programme investigates how human beings become who they become, how those developmental structures shape the systems they create, and what becomes possible when adaptation gives way to conscious participation.

Over the last decade, through thousands of coaching conversations with founders, CEOs, executives, athletes, and high performers, I became increasingly interested in a recurring question:

"Why do intelligent, capable, and successful people continue to suffer, and how do the hidden structures that organise human behaviour shape both individual lives and collective outcomes?"

What began as observations from coaching practice gradually evolved into a broader body of research exploring adaptation, development, identity, meaning, contribution, leadership, and the human condition.

The papers below represent a selection of current research projects and ongoing areas of inquiry.

Because many manuscripts continue to evolve through peer review, revision, and ongoing development, full papers are not publicly available through this website.

Research Themes & Academic Papers

A decade of inquiry distilled. These essays weave psychology, philosophy, and myth into a single question: what happens when ambition outgrows itself?

They argue that the high performer’s next frontier is ethical — to transform success from personal conquest into collective contribution.

Although the papers explore a wide range of topics, they are united by a common interest in human development and organised around four recurring areas of inquiry.

Systems of Influence

Exploring how private psychological structures shape organisations, relationships, culture, and collective outcomes.

Human Becoming

Exploring meaning, morality, spirituality, tragedy, and the deeper questions of human existence.

Celebrity High Performer Series

These pieces strip away the performance and expose what truly drives some of the most influential people of our time.

Musk, Trump, Hormozi, Peterson, Tate.

Through them, we see the truth most high performers avoid: success doesn’t cure the wound, it only hides it.

The book behind Max Stephens’ FSD framework

Compensatory High Performance is the book behind the FSD framework.

It examines how success can become organised around adaptation, compensation and unresolved psychological pressure — and why achievement does not always resolve the deeper structures beneath it.

Through the FSD model, Max Stephens explores how early fracture can become strategy, how strategy can become identity, and how high performance can both create success and constrain development.
