Psychological research has generated extensive accounts of high performance through constructs such as achievement motivation, grit, perfectionism, self-determination, and deliberate practice. Although these perspectives explain how exceptional performance develops and is sustained, they pay comparatively little attention to the psychological function that achievement serves for the individual. This paper introduces Compensatory High Performance (CHP) as a developmental construct describing sustained achievement that is organised primarily around the regulation of perceived inadequacy, conditional worth, or unresolved developmental adaptation rather than the expression of an integrated identity. Rather than defining high performance by observable outcomes alone, the construct distinguishes between the external manifestation of achievement and the developmental organisation from which that achievement emerges. The paper positions CHP as conceptually distinct from adjacent constructs including perfectionism, grit, workaholism, narcissism, impostor phenomenon, and self-determination theory by arguing that these frameworks describe traits, motivational orientations, or behavioural tendencies without directly accounting for the developmental function that achievement performs. A conceptual definition of CHP is proposed, its boundaries are clarified, necessary and sufficient characteristics are specified, and its nomological network is examined. Finally, the paper outlines a programme of empirical research addressing measurement development, construct validation, longitudinal investigation, and intervention. By introducing CHP as a distinct developmental construct, this paper aims to provide a more precise vocabulary for understanding psychologically different forms of exceptional achievement and to establish a conceptual foundation for future research into the developmental organisation of high performance.
