Prior to working with Max, I had been struggling with some failing real estate deals. The pain had been going on for three years, and we were lucky enough to meet when Max was a guest on my podcast.
I didn’t necessarily have the words to articulate it, but my actions were leading me down an unwinnable path. I knew I needed to take some significant actions to turn the corner. I was in a dark space and wasn’t sure how to get out.
Largely, I am someone who never feels successful regardless of the circumstances. There was always a “but” attached to every win, no matter how big or small. At the same time, the losses and failures felt extremely deep.
As it turns out, I am a bully to myself, which became a big part of the work.
Working with Max was very revealing. The most impactful moment was when I was describing myself and he asked how I would feel if I were saying those same things about someone else. That hit very hard. Some of the questions and challenges he presented offered a powerful shift in perspective.
From self-attack to self-trust and expansion
I now have a sticky note on my desk that says “I am a bully to myself.” That small reminder has become a kind of reverse mantra. When I struggle to accept a win or positive feedback, it immediately comes to mind.
I am still my own worst critic, but I am getting better at catching it. More importantly, I want to model self-acceptance to my children.
Since we started working together, I have bought a business, started a business, and grown a business — and I’m genuinely excited about the future of all three.
For anyone considering this kind of work: coaching works. We often can’t see ourselves clearly. A good coach helps you identify the self-sabotage at play — and, more importantly, find a roadmap to change it.
