Case Study: Entrepreneur Navigating Health Challenges

The Challenge

When achievement became tied to self-acceptance

I was facing a health situation that resulted in significant self-doubt, feelings of inadequacy and disappointment. The determination and self-criticism that I used for motivation in the past became counterproductive. I was caught in a spiral where my desire for an outcome that could not be achieved resulted in more self-criticism and stress. I was caught in a loop.

I set conditions on which I would accept myself. I will accept myself if… This was a pattern that I had used throughout my life. In my current challenge, there were biological factors that would not allow me to achieve the desired goal, which led to worsening feelings of inadequacy.

The Approach

Letting go of control and redefining what growth really means

Max was an incredible coach. What I appreciated most is that he let me guide each session based on insights or challenges from the week. Although he regularly gave action items, he would not let that dominate the subsequent week if it was not needed.

There were several “aha” moments during our sessions. He helped me realise that feeling nervous is normal and okay — the main issue is trying to push the nervousness away, which only helps it persist. Another breakthrough was framing the situation as “allowing myself to fail” and discussing what opportunities opened up for me with this mindset.

The biggest shift was in my relationship with myself. I learned to be kinder with myself. I came to realise that the self-criticism that had been routine throughout my life was no longer serving me — or the people around me.

Max also helped me trust the universe and “ride the waves” rather than gripping tightly to outcomes that were outside my control. The distinction between the circle of control, circle of influence and circle of concern made this very clear to me.

The Outcome

Finding peace through self-trust rather than self-pressure

By being kinder to myself and accepting situations as they arise, I was able to achieve the outcomes I was looking for. Ironically, allowing myself the opportunity to fail resulted in more success.

Max highlighted the difference between real growth versus fake growth, and by working towards real growth, the issue eventually became a non-issue.

I now have much more clarity around the things that are genuinely important to me — helping others, supporting my family — and everything else seems to fall into place around that.

Many high achievers are unaware that their pattern of thinking may not actually be serving them well. I certainly didn’t consider an alternative worldview before this, and it has resulted in much more inner peace.
